Get off the beaten track

Get off the beaten track

Freedom is the oxygen of the soul.

It seems that, at least for the time being, we are still slightly deprived of our soul-oxygen. But rest assured. Once we can experience the freedom of the outdoors in full glory once more, fresh air will fill both our souls and lungs just as words of new adventures roll from our tongues.

Yet these adventures need not necessarily be extreme. Often the thrill of a journey in the nearby unknown suffices. While a faraway breakaway isolated from people does sound tempting, it’s fair to say that we have isolated quite enough in recent times. There are ways to stray from the beaten track without having to go to the lonely corners of the earth. After all, we are a country that believes Local is Lekker.

A recent study concluded that about 79% of South Africans prefer to travel locally rather than abroad, and rightfully so. Each province, city and suburb provide a new taste to our unique culture. Take a foodie tour of your city where unexplored dishes, restaurants and food markets may be lurking. Visit the tourist attractions close to you, discovering the splendour waiting just beyond your doorstep. The possibilities truly are endless.

So, go out there and allow joy and wanderlust to fill your very being. And once you’re surrounded by your own suburb’s hidden beauty, you’ll realise that all the little things, the little moments, the little places, weren’t so little after all.
